XR = eXtended Reality (everything VR, AR, MR)

📣 If you only read one thing today 📣

🤝 Meta has acquired a large part of Sony’s XR intellectual property: 419 patents on head-mounted displays and mixed reality, under a December 2025 agreement, with 43 US patents formally reassigned this summer.

📢 Moving hundreds of headset and mixed reality patents from one major platform holder to another consolidates key XR intellectual property under Meta, strengthening its position against Apple, Samsung, Google and Valve.

🕶 Future Meta headsets, including VR Glasses, could build on display and mixed reality technology that Sony spent a decade developing.

🥳 But there’s more:

🪐 Once called Janet’s Planets, Terry’s Terraforming lands on Quest 3 on October 22 for $14.99.

🎩 Rarely open to outsiders, Hollywood’s Magic Castle can now be visited on Vision Pro.

🔋 Battery life climbs by up to 12% with SteamOS 0.4 on Steam Frame.

XR Games

🪐 Once called Janet’s Planets, Terry’s Terraforming lands on Quest 3 on October 22 for $14.99, tasking players with reshaping dying worlds for picky aliens over six hours, while a Steam version will follow later.

📲 Developer mode and USB cables are no longer needed to sideload on Quest, as SideQuest now installs over Bluetooth-enabled wireless ADB and fetches existing Steam ports directly in the headset.

🔫 Three years after its last major update, Mothergunship: Forge gets the “Thank You, Recruit!” patch, jumping to Unreal 5.7 and adding Ascension and Daily modes plus optional hand tracking on Quest.

🪄 Gesture-drawn spells make The Magician VR: The Cursed Wand, a gothic Quest wave shooter out for $19.99, easy to learn but grindy to master, earning it 3.5 stars from UploadVR.

XR Entertainment

🏈 Select live college football games are being streamed by ESPN in 180-degree 8K with Dolby Atmos through Quest’s TV app, every week through the January 2027 CFP National Championship.

🪖 Starting October 27, D-Day VR Museum will also run on an ordinary PC monitor, though developer Lichtblau IT keeps the existing VR mode fully available under the same Steam listing.

🎩 Rarely open to outsiders, Hollywood’s Magic Castle can now be visited on Vision Pro through You Are Here, two 20-minute immersive episodes capturing Siegfried Tieber’s live close-up magic.

XR News

🤝 Under a deal signed in December 2025, 419 Sony XR patents covering head-mounted displays and mixed reality are being transferred to Meta, with 43 US patents already reassigned between June and September.

📡 An unannounced Xreal “AR Glasses Computing Kit” has cleared the FCC with Wi-Fi 6E at 160MHz, though the filing names no glasses, chipset or launch date.

🙂 Once version 0.3.0 leaves testing, free social app VR Realms will mirror facial expressions on Quest Pro and let desktop players drive their avatars with a webcam.

🔍 Interior and exterior photos of Pico Space Pro have surfaced in Japanese regulatory filings, exposing the delayed Vision Pro rival ahead of its expected Q4 launch.

🔋 Battery life climbs by up to 12% with SteamOS 0.4 on Steam Frame, an update that also sharpens streaming colors and reduces “Error 17” connection failures.

💾 Meta VR Glasses will be the company’s first standalone headset with expandable storage, and SanDisk is supplying official Made for Meta microSD Express cards and USB-C drives for it.

AI News

🧠 Billed as Meta’s first frontier models, Muse Wonder and Wonder Full match Fable 5.1 and GPT-6 Astra in Meta’s own tests, while claiming the lead on long-term memory.

🎧 Stripped of camera and display, Ray-Ban Meta Audio went on sale on October 13 for $349, fitting Meta AI, open-ear speakers and a 12-hour battery into a 43-gram frame.

🛒 It’s no budget play: Alibaba’s Qwen Glasses N1, now sold in China from roughly $450, pair a 50MP camera with the Qwen assistant, while a Pro model adds eye tracking and iris payments.

Until next time, enjoy your other reality gaming!
