Meta Opens Its Smart Glasses
Tetris with hands, Meta Presents Draymond Green, VONDER AI Glasses
XR = eXtended Reality (everything VR, AR, MR)
📣 If you only read one thing today 📣
🕶️ Meta used Connect to unveil the finished form of Project Phoenix: VR Glasses weighing about 100 grams, with compute and battery moved to a 300-gram tethered puck, priced at $1,299.99 and shipping in spring 2027.
📢 This is Meta's first real departure from the Quest form factor, and the company is already backing it with a $1M developer competition for seated, hand-tracked apps, a sign that it plans a full ecosystem rather than a niche experiment.
🥽 It points toward VR comfortable enough to wear for long sessions, with launch content being funded now, though a price more than twice a Quest 3's makes the puck trade-off worth judging carefully before buying.
🥳 But there’s more:
🏎️ ApexX Racing Championship launched September 30 on Meta Quest, offering five tracks, multiple cars and an immersive showroom.
🌍 Sandbox VR opens its first Spanish venue on October 1, in Barcelona’s Les Glòries district.
💰 A $1 million prize pool has been put up by Meta for its new Start developer competition.

👓 Meta’s Wearables Device Access Toolkit 1.0 began rolling out September 30, giving developers a stable SDK for accessing cameras, microphones, motion sensors, audio and displays across Meta’s AI-glasses portfolio. Meta also opened standalone Web Apps for Ray-Ban Meta Display to developers using ordinary HTML, CSS and JavaScript, potentially lowering the barrier to creating third-party software for display-equipped smart glasses without a native app or dedicated SDK.
📈 Orders for Virtuix's Omni One treadmill have roughly tripled since Quest support arrived in June, the company says, with its compatible library now topping 75 games and Meta VR Glasses support expected.
🕶️ VONDER's first AI glasses start at $299 with neither camera nor display, turn speech into text memories while deleting the audio, and ship in the US from November.
💰 A $1 million prize pool has been put up by Meta for its new Start developer competition, which runs until November 18 and rewards seated, fully hand-tracked apps for the upcoming VR Glasses.
🥽 Weighing about 100 grams because their compute and battery move into a 300-gram puck on an optical tether, Meta VR Glasses, the finished form of Project Phoenix, will cost $1,299.99 when they arrive in spring 2027.
🖥️ On PCs with two discrete graphics cards, Steam Link automatically picks the Nvidia one for VR streaming, and Valve has confirmed there is currently no way to override that choice.
